Feeling Down? Here’s Why You Should Get into Plants

Nature has always been known to help us humans feel better. But amid lockdowns, it’s not easy to get out to our favorite places. Social distancing at the beach is possible, but it’s not quite the same as running straight from the car to the water. And hiking is still great, but it’s been a brutally hot summer for most of the U.S., and heat advisories are keeping people indoors.

So, the solution is, of course, to bring nature to you!

That’s why now is the perfect time to get into plants. Blooming flowers and durable succulents will liven up your space, ease sadness and depression, and generally make you feel a lot more awesome.

We’re not built to be inside all day

Indoor plants are extremely beneficial in making us feel more connected to nature even when we’re stuck inside.

Humans didn’t evolve to be in buildings all the time, right? We’re constantly shielded from the sun’s warmth, and we’re almost always walking along hard, unnatural surfaces. Our view of the beautiful blue sky above is typically blocked by rooftops and billboards.

Humans are just living beings like any other animals, and deep down, we will feel it if we’re not getting enough nature time.

Heal your soul with plants

Studies have shown that placing plants in hospital recovery rooms helps patients heal more quickly.

“Mother Nature is a brilliant chemist,” says Dr. Michael J Balick, who is the vice president for Botanical Science at the New York Botanical gardens. “From earliest times, our ancestors have learned to use plants to heal and promote good health.”

There have also been reports that plants in office spaces result in people calling in sick less. How crazy?

Plants are also known to relax people. They will actually help lower your blood pressure, your stress and your anxiety.

Another added benefit of plants? They’re noise blockers! Plants around your yard and in your home can help block out noise from the outdoor world.
