Apple iPhone 12: Worth Upgrading, or Skip It?

Apple

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… for Apple devotees, anyway. On Tuesday, the company revealed a new lineup of four new phone models. We’ve got all the juicy details–and the final word on whether you should upgrade.

New Changes to the iPhone 12

Although this year’s announcement of new tech from Apple lacked the glitzy press conference, the products themselves are still buzzworthy.

The new phones in the range are:

  • iPhone 12 Mini
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Max

The bargain option will set you back $699, while the top-of-the-line model will be $1099.

Apple made incremental improvements over the iPhone 11 rather than offering brand-new features. That includes a camera that works in low light without a flash and a faster chip than the previous model. The glass is more durable, too, which is great for those of us who are accident-prone.

Is 5G Worth the Price of Admission?

Because we live in a bizarre timeline where nothing makes any sense, the first things a lot of people think of when they hear “5G” are conspiracy theories.

The short version of the most common theory is that some folks drew a straight line between the start of the coronavirus pandemic and 5G towers going up in metropolitan areas. It’s not as much of a fringe theory as you might imagine, either. A shocking number of people on social media are still circulating claims that the 5G towers are part of a conspiracy theory (possibly helmed by Bill Gates) to make us sick.

Despite this clear and present danger to public health, Apple went ahead and made their latest iPhones 5G compliant.

“Every decade, there’s a new technology that provides a step change in what we can do with our iPhones,” CEO Tim Cook said of the 5G iPhone 12. “Today is the beginning of a new era for iPhone.”

But that might not mean anything for the average user. Unless you live in an area that is covered by a 5G network, then you won’t notice a difference. Eventually, however, that coverage will reach your hometown. At that point, your phone will be capable of taking advantage of the ultra-fast network.

How long will that take? According to experts, it might be five to seven years before the entire United States is covered by a full, high-band 5G network. At that point, your iPhone 12 will be beyond obsolete.

The Bottom Line

If you have a relatively new phone that still meets your needs, you can probably wait on the iPhone 12. However, if you’re looking to upgrade anyway–and especially if you live in an area with 5G coverage, it’s a good deal.
