Thor is back on the big screen after five years away in the latest Marvel outing, Thor Love and Thunder. Director Taika Waititi returned to the franchise to helm another Thor outing, with Marvel mainstay Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as the title character and Natalie Portman returning to the franchise for the first time in nearly a decade.
So, what can fans expect from the latest Thor outing? Let’s dive in and see what Marvel has in store for the God of Thunder.
At the end of Avengers: Endgame, the status quo for the Marvel universe is largely upended. Tony Stark, Natasha Romanov, and Vision all gave their lives to help stop the murderous Thanos. This leaves the Avengers in a bizarre state, and Thor chooses to travel off-world with the Guardians of the Galaxy after the Battle of Earth.
When Love and Thunder opens, Thor has been living with the Guardians for some time and has become close with the crew of the Benatar. However, circumstances beyond their control force the group apart: the sudden appearance of Gorr, the God Butcher, sees Thor rushing off to stop the murderous villain as the Guardians move to help innocent people harmed by Gorr’s rampage.
While fighting against Gorr’s minions on Earth, Thor sees his legendary weapon, Mjolnir, flying around the battlefield. He’s initially elated to see the artifact repaired after his sister, Hela, destroyed it during Ragnarok. However, he soon realizes that it’s no longer under his control. His ex-girlfriend, Jane Foster, now wields the mighty hammer.
With its enchantment coursing through her, Jane is transformed into an Asgardian hero. While Thor helps her understand what it means to be a hero, the two reckon with their failed relationship and discuss the love they once shared.
Thor and Jane, along with their ally, Valkyrie, must try to stop Gorr before he succeeds in wiping out all of the universe’s gods. After all, Thor and Jane are among the pantheon that Gorr wants to see cast down from their seat of power.
Does the God of Thunder stand a chance against the God Butcher? What does the future hold for the Strongest Avenger? Thor Love and Thunder is playing in theaters now, and fans have plenty of things to say about it. Don’t miss out on the latest movie from the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.
